Cut orchids or a potted plant?

A cut Singapore orchid spray gives you the architecture immediately and holds for two to three weeks in water, which is far longer than most cut flowers. A potted phalaenopsis holds its blooms for two to three months and then flowers again the following year. Send the spray when you want the gesture now, the plant when you want it to keep going.

Are orchids hard to look after?

Less than their reputation suggests. A potted phalaenopsis wants bright indirect light, no direct sun, and a small amount of water once a week rather than a lot occasionally. The most common way to lose one is kindness in the form of overwatering.
